wa budget 2017: aboriginal community wanted a water park but was given a $7 million pool

by:KK INFLATABLE      2020-06-14
The Kalumburu Aboriginal community was allocated a $7 million pool in Thursday\'s state budget, but what they actually wanted was a cheaper water park and was available for domestic violence
While the idea of the pool has been around for several years, the community has contacted the Washington state government to say what they want from the regional royalties program, a $2 water park. 5 million.
Melissa Taylor, Business Manager at Kalumburu Aboriginal, said that in one of Australia\'s most remote 500 communities, mainly indigenous residents, safety issues in staffing and maintenance of swimming pools
\"The pool has caused a range of other support and maintenance issues, but mainly health and safety issues related to pool management in remote communities.
\"The government defended the lack of consultation for the pool announcement, and Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said that they were in the government for only six months and the time for community consultation was limited.
\"We are doing our best to make a budget in time,\" MacTiernan MS . \".
After consultation with the community, the funds announced in the budget may be transferred to other projects, the minister said.
\"It\'s a great pleasure to talk to anyone about how they can restructure their funds,\" she said . \".
The minister acknowledged that $7 million was a large sum of money for a pool, but said that the facilities played a greater role in indigenous communities than in entertainment.
\"Of course I hope we can provide these [pools]in a more cost-
But I do say that these pools do play an important role in those remote communities.
\"Similarly, the Balgo indigenous community in southern Kimberley has announced a funding pool of $7 million.
According to community liaison officer George Lee, the announcement was welcomed after proper consultation as it was a good commitment.
\"It\'s been a long time,\" Mr. Li said . \"
\"Some of our water holes don\'t last in the summer, and it\'s hot.
\"Mr. Li acknowledges that in remote communities like Balgo, it is a challenge to provide staff for community swimming pools.
But in Kalumburu, located on the coast and by the river, the community prefers the water park, which will use circulating chlorine water to provide the benefits of the swimming pool, without the need for lifeguards to be on duty.
\"A water park obviously won\'t cost $7 million, but it will cost at least a few million dollars,\" MS Taylor said . \".
She said that by setting up a male Center, the difference in costs could be spent on preventing domestic violence in the community, which would complement the existing women\'s shelter in Kalumburu.
\"If we can put this money into a male Center in Kalumburu, it could be an important infrastructure in Kalumburu,\" she said . \".
\"Part of the question about community Domestic violence is that women have a place to go and talk to someone, but there is nowhere for Kalumburu\'s men to go.
\"It\'s not just a \'man\'s holiday \'--
More than that.
This is a place where men can go, extract themselves from any situation they are in, and be able to seek health professional advice.
