GM today asked the government to postpone the 1973 deadline for installing inflatable safety air bass on new cars for another two years.
A spokesman said more research needs to be done, especially since the expansion of plastic bags can cause damage to drivers.
With a public hearing on the proposed government regulations, 15 senators and 60 members of the House urged the Department of Transport to reject any request for delay.

Campbell said his company wanted to do more research on the sound caused by the explosive device, which was used to inflate the bag in a crash.
\"We are very worried about hearing loss of some drivers,\" he said . \".
Ford Motor agreed that more research would be needed.
Ford spokesman Stewart Fry said the Ford test showed that in some cases, the airbag failed to explode in time to prevent the driver from hitting the wind shield. Mr.
Ford \"does not underestimate the potential of airbags, but wants to see their capabilities that have not been proven,\" Fry said.
However, he did not propose to postpone the deadline.
If all cars are equipped with airbags, they can save at least 20,000 lives a year.
As the unit has now been removed, the bag is stored on the columns of the steering wheel, under the dashboard and on the back of the front seat.
The car will be equipped with a collision impact sensor that will automatically inflate the airbag for about a second after the collision.
Drivers and passengers are thrown forward by the impact of the collision, and as the airbag blooms, the airbag absorbs the impact.
Once the impact occurs, the bag deflates quickly to clear the driver\'s vi sion.
